OUR HISTORY
When You Own a Strauss Peyton, You Own a Piece of Kansas City History.
Strauss Peyton Portrait Studio is proud to be the oldest continuously operating portrait photography studio in the country. Established in 1900 and still thriving today, our studio is where history, artistry, and family legacy
come together. In 2025, we’re honored to celebrate our 125th anniversary—and even more thrilled to be voted Best Photographer in Johnson County.
The story began when Benjamin Strauss, trained in portraiture by his brother Julius Caesar Strauss in St.Louis, brought his vision to Kansas City. In 1908, Homer Peyton joined the studio as a skilled artist and innovator, and together they built a name synonymous with excellence. The studio quickly became known for its refined photographic style and earned national acclaim for its portraits of iconic celebrities and cultural figures—names like Charlie Chaplin, Fred Astaire, Jean Harlow, and Douglas MacArthur
Strauss Peyton took full advantage of Kansas City’s vibrant theatrical scene and its easy access to the railroads, opening a second location in the Muehlebach Hotel to serve the city’s elite and visiting dignitaries. The studio’s elegant portraiture frequently graced the society pages, one being Kansas City’s The Independent, and became a staple for families, business leaders, and anyone seeking timeless, professional portraits in Kansas City.
By 1929, the studio had been sold and moved to the Country Club Plaza, where it remained a household name for decades. Fortunately, its archive of over 55,000 glass plates and negatives—spanning generations of Kansas City life—was donated to the Jackson County Historical Society before the devastating Brush Creek flood of 1977. That same year, the studio was purchased by the Braswell family, who became the fifth owners. Just four months after the purchase, the flood hit, destroying the studio. Mark Braswell led a complete rebuild and over the years, ushered the business into a new era. He modernized the studio’s approach by adopting digital photography early and pioneering techniques like direct-to-canvas printing, painted canvas portraits, and fine art watercolors. His career spanned five decades and earned international recognition. But more than awards, it was his commitment to creating lasting, meaningful portraits for Kansas City families that defined his legacy

At Strauss Peyton, we don’t just take portraits—we preserve the moments, milestones, and emotions that define your family’s legacy.

In 2018, Mark passed ownership of the studio to his son, Jonathan Braswell, and Jonathan’s wife, Kaela. Jonathan grew up in the studio, first assisting his father and later stepping into the role of principal photographer. With a deep understanding of lighting, technique, and craftsmanship, he now leads the photography side of the business. Kaela, also an experienced portrait artist with a background running her own studio in Seattle, serves as the creative director and client guide—helping families plan everything from wardrobe to wall art.
Together, Jonathan and Kaela continue the Strauss Peyton tradition of crafting heirloom-quality portraits with modern artistry. From family portraits in Overland Park to professional headshots, maternity photography, and children’s milestone sessions, every portrait is designed to be meaningful, personal, and timeless. Strauss Peyton isn’t just a portrait studio—it’s a place where your family story is honored, preserved, and turned into legacy artwork you’ll treasure for generations. When you want more than “just a picture,” when
you’re looking for the best portrait photography in Kansas City, we’re here to help you hold close the moments that matter most.
